The Feeling of Butterflies Flying Away
by Stephanie Reis '20

The Feeling Of Butterflies Flying away
It is the hurt of a flirt you give to her
It is glancing to you when you look longingly at another
It is talking to you and feeling joy from the chat
The way you always have a punny joke or sarcastic comment
You always kept the conversation alive
But torment from knowing I will only ever be a friend
It is dreaming of a life we can live happily together
But having the knowledge your feelings will never be the same

Why was I hung up on you?
You had average looks
Average skills
But your personality struck me
You were different and you brought change
Like a sailboat during a storm
Your turbulent personality struck me
Your sense of self and courage to be you
The way you stood out among the rest
And yet you were always there for a late night text
I was drawn to the unusual
And from that I gave my heart away

I was used to being the supporter
Someone to stand up for my friends
Provide an encouraging word
But you were my supporter
You were the first one to give me the inspiration I needed
Like a bird learning how to fly
You gave me the wings I needed to soar
But you clipped them so quickly
When you told me you loved her

Butterflies are what I felt
Until the realization hit
That love is not lack luster
I had been hung up on you
And I realized I had thrown my life away
To someone who would never care
While you never found love either
For you did the same
And I faced the painful realization
I was doing the same thing to another
