"The Chickadee" by Emily '23
Art by Mary Rose Corkery '18
Some animals run away
Plenty of birds do
Geese scream as they fly south
Some animals ignore it
Bears and frogs do
Bears curling up in warm dens with full bellies
And frogs napping beneath the mud
Few actually stay to tough it out
But who is it that stays?
The chickadee
A tiny song bird, easily pushed around by jays for seed
That is the one that stays to fight through the winter
Maybe the ones that turn away from winter are smarter,
But the chickadee sees what they never will
The first snowfall, that turns skeletal trees into shimmering treasures
The humans who slide around on human ponds but seem to have so much fun
Streets that sprout from floors burst with light and color
The chickadee sees it all
The chickadee with no one to share it with
Plenty of birds do
Geese scream as they fly south
Some animals ignore it
Bears and frogs do
Bears curling up in warm dens with full bellies
And frogs napping beneath the mud
Few actually stay to tough it out
But who is it that stays?
The chickadee
A tiny song bird, easily pushed around by jays for seed
That is the one that stays to fight through the winter
Maybe the ones that turn away from winter are smarter,
But the chickadee sees what they never will
