A Toast
by Elizabeth West '16

To all the ships that never sailed,
To all the words long gone
To the dreams never fulfilled,
And the songs never sung
To all the flowers that never bloomed
cut down in their prime
And to all the names
On a wall, they are inscribed
To mountains forgotten
And rivers dry
To talents forgotten
And ideas that died
To all of these things
that never came to be
And last of all
To you and me
To all the words long gone
To the dreams never fulfilled,
And the songs never sung
To all the flowers that never bloomed
cut down in their prime
And to all the names
On a wall, they are inscribed
To mountains forgotten
And rivers dry
To talents forgotten
And ideas that died
To all of these things
that never came to be
And last of all
To you and me
