"A Christmas for Two" by Victoria Richardson '21

I grab the vinyl of our favorite song.
I put it on the record player and it starts filling the room with sweet harmonies.
“Silent Night...”
I can feel her presence behind me.
“Holy Night”
She grabs my hands.
“All is calm”
She kisses my cheek and asks me to dance.
“All is bright”
I accept with a smile.
“Well, here we are. How was your day?” She asked.
“It’s...different.” I respond and hold her closer to me. It was rather silent for a moment. She knows I hate silence, but this time I was the one to break it.
“I’m sorry. We shouldn’t have fought that night...and it was over something so stupid!” I said. “Honey, it wasn’t your fault! I was the one who-”
“But honey! I shouldn’t have gotten so mad because you wouldn’t have left and driven on the road! It was so icy and and and the snow was piling up and and the truck and oh my...” Her face presses against mine and I immediately shut up. She just whispers in my ear,
“That night is not your fault. Want to know why? Because I know at the end of everyday, and at the end of every fight; you love me and I love you.”
When the music stops, I lose the feeling of her hands in mine. I can’t feel her cheek pressed against mine.I go from hugging her to hugging myself.
She is gone.
I turn and a single look at our wedding photo makes me burst out into tears. I don’t want to spend this Christmas alone.
I can’t spend it without her.
So I try to play the same song again.
So I can relive the days where we would spend Christmas together
Because today, I was the stuck in a—
